MaineDOT has informed the City that it will begin mill and paving projects on several state roads in South Portland beginning July 14, 2024. The projects include:
- Route 77/Casco Bay Bridge (both directions)
- Broadway (Cottage to bridge)
- Ocean St. (Market to Broadway, plus spur)
- Evans St. (Nutter to Highland)
- Running Hill Rd (Maine Mall Road to Scarborough line)
The City will be having a pre-construction meeting with MaineDOT on July 2, 2024 and will have a better sense of timeframes and traffic measures that the state will be taking. However, we are providing this notice so that you can plan your travel. We suggest you carve out extra time if you travel on these roads, or plan alternate routes. When we have updated information, we will update our Current & Anticipated Construction Projects page, where you can also sign up to receive an alert when there is an update.
The City will also be paving a number of local roads this season. See the list of planned projects. Please note that we are not always able to announce timelines for paving in advance, as this work is dependent on a number of factors, including weather and contractor availability.
UPDATE from MaineDOT 7/3/24: Regarding the Casco Bay Bridge project, the contractor intends to do all of their work at night for minimal disruption. The project will start Monday, July 8, 2024 with traffic control improvements (they’re switching traffic lights to camera operated). They plan on milling starting the night of August 4th and paving the first week of September, though these dates are subject to change. The milled pavement will be striped. DOT requires that two way traffic be maintained over the bridge at all times. The contractor must maintain two lanes of traffic going north from 6am to 9am and two lanes of traffic going south from 4pm-6pm.
