Sustainability
Mission
The mission of South Portland's Office of Sustainability is to guide the development of policies and practices that simultaneously promote economic well-being, strong community connections, and a healthy environment.
Climate Goals
The City of South Portland committed to ambitious climate goals that guide the work of the Sustainability Office:
- Reduce community-wide greenhouse gas emissions 80% from 2017 baseline levels by 2050.
- Transition to 100% clean renewable energy in municipal operations by 2040.
- Build the resilience of our neighborhoods, infrastructure, and ecosystems to prepare for, withstand, and recover from the impacts of climate change.
The Cities of Portland and South Portland developed a joint climate action and adaptation plan that charts a course to meeting these shared goals. One Climate Future is an innovative regional approach that lays out the steps to achieving aggressive carbon reduction goals, growing a circular economy, building community resilience, and creating more just and equitable cities. The South Portland City Council officially adopted the plan on October 13, 2020.

2026 Repair Fair
The Sustainability Department and Waste Reduction Committee held the City’s second Repair Fair hosted by the Main Library on Saturday, January 24th. The event was made possible by 5 event staff, the Waste Reduction Committee, and 16 volunteer fixers who shared sewing, mending, electronics, jewelry, bike, and other repair skills. 162 community members gathered in the space throughout the morning, chatting with neighbors over donuts and coffee while giving their once broken items a second life. The zealous volunteers fixed a total of 78 items, including 25 sewing and mending, 21 electronics and small appliances, 19 lamps, and 10 jewelry repairs. Community members connected while engaging in the circular economy, as they repaired items that may otherwise enter our landfills. Enjoy the video below for highlights from the Repair Fair!
