SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – Last night, South Portland City Council appointed Jessica Hughes as the City’s new Clerk and Registrar of Voters. Jessica succeeds Emily Scully, who concluded her tenure with the City this month after over eight years in the position.
Ms. Hughes comes to the City with a wide variety of administrative experience, including work as a private sector analyst and at the Saco-based law firm Williams-Greco, P.A. She also has extensive experience working in higher education at the University of New England. Ms. Hughes holds a Master of Education, Administration of Higher Education from Suffolk University and an undergraduate degree in Communication Technology from Sacred Heart University.
City Councilors Linda Cohen, Elyse Tipton, and Mayor Misha Pride comprised the hiring committee for the new City Clerk. The City’s Human Resources department helped facilitate the hiring process. The committee interviewed five candidates, and ultimately selected Ms. Hughes. Her strong organizational prowess and technological expertise stood out, as did her motivation to rise to the challenge of the position. While working as a municipal Clerk will be a new domain for her, Ms. Hughes is eager to learn and has enrolled in the New Clerks Workshop sponsored by the Maine Town & City Clerks’ Association.
“We are so happy to have found a City Clerk in Jessica, who is ready to hit the ground running,” said Mayor Pride.
Ms. Hughes started her duties as South Portland City Clerk and Registrar of Voters today, Wednesday, May 15. “I am delighted to join the wonderful City of South Portland,” she said. “With the State Primary Election around the corner, I am eager to begin serving the community.”
The City will compensate Ms. Hughes with an annual salary of $77,000.
