Waste Reduction Committee Tip: Plastic Bags

Boards & Committees News Posted on July 18, 2024

 Did you know? Plastic bags and film are not permitted in your South Portland recycling bin. Do not bag your recyclables in plastic before placing them in your bin.

DO REDUCE your use of plastic bags/film:

-    Use your own reusable bags or containers when shopping – think beyond the reusable shopping bag - produce, deli counter, etc.

-    Purchase products that are not packaged in plastic bags/film like produce from the Farmer’s Market or by buying in bulk;

-    Refuse a bag for easy-to-carry purchases; and

-    Ask for paper instead of plastic shopping bags when necessary.

DO REUSE plastic bags/film:

-    On multiple shopping trips;

-    After cleaning - According to Ziploc, plastic bags are strong enough to be reused after hand-washing with soap and air drying;

-    As trash-can liners, dog waste bags, paint brush covers, muddy shoe covers, etc.

DO RECYCLE:

-    Grocery and produce bags, bread bags, plastic stretch wraps, newspaper bags, plastic mailers, product wrap, dry cleaning bags, ice bags, wood pellet bags, and plastic films labeled with #2 or #4 recycling symbols:

-    That is CLEAN, DRY and FREE OF FOOD RESIDUE,

-    At Allagash Brewing Co,  Demoulas Market Basket, Hannaford *I Recycle, Kohl’s, Ocean State Job Lot, Shaw’s, and Whole Foods
