SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – Today, South Portland Police responded to two separate motor vehicle incidents, one in which a car hit a bicyclist and another where a car hit a pedestrian. Minor injuries resulted from both of these accidents.
The first occurred this morning at approximately 7:10 AM. South Portland Police investigated a crash on Evans Street near Bonnybriar Road. A 14-year-old male was riding his bicycle in traffic when he was struck by a car. He suffered minor injuries, and South Portland Fire Rescue transported him to an area hospital, accompanied by his mother. The operator of the vehicle that hit the teen stopped at the time of the crash. Police cited the operator for failure to yield. Officers did not find that any issue on the road itself played a role in the crash.
The second occurred at approximately 11 AM. South Portland Police investigated a pedestrian who was struck by a motor vehicle on Maine Mall Road near Philbrook Avenue. A 30-year-old female was crossing in the crosswalk when a car struck her. She suffered minor injuries and was transported by South Portland Fire Rescue to a local hospital. The operator of the vehicle stopped immediately and cooperated with police at the scene. Officers cited the operator for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
The South Portland Police Department would like to remind drivers to navigate the roads carefully and to look out for pedestrians and bicyclists always while operating a vehicle.
