News Releases Posted on May 15, 2025

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – On April 20, 2025, at approximately 11:25 PM, South Portland Police responded to what was initially reported as an assault complaint. The incident was reported to have happened at Bug Light Park, which is located at the end of Madison Street in South Portland. Further investigation showed that two victims had been robbed by two suspects who were known to them, and personal property was taken. A firearm was displayed and used to strike one of the victims during the robbery, but was not fired. This victim required medical attention at Maine Medical Center for minor injuries sustained during the assault. Detectives were notified and took over the investigation.

Over the course of several days, two suspects were developed in the case, and several search warrants were issued. On Wednesday, April 23, 2025, detectives from the South Portland Police Department, with the assistance of South Portland and Portland Police SWAT teams, and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, simultaneously executed three search warrants. The warrants were served at 1344 Washington Avenue and 93 Harris Avenue in Portland, and at a local college.  During the searches, a stolen firearm was recovered, which was later determined to be the firearm used in the robbery.

During the warrant service, two suspects were taken into custody:

  • Jeissey Blash Khamis, 18 years old of Portland, was charged with felony counts of Robbery, Aggravated Assault, and Theft.
  • Mogga Wani Yanga, 18 years old of Portland, was charged with felony counts of Robbery, Aggravated Assault, and Theft.

Both suspects were transported to the Cumberland County Jail and bail was originally set at $10,000 cash. Both subjects were arraigned in Portland on April 25, 2025. Khamis was released on $1,000 cash bail and Yanga was released on $300 cash bail.

The investigation of the stolen firearm is ongoing. Police believe this to be a standalone incident not related to any other recent crime.
