City Council News Posted on August 01, 2024

The August 6, 2024 City Council meeting agenda includes:

• Petitions & Communications: Fishing Shacks Update - A summary of the City of South Portland Code Officer’s research findings on requirements for meeting federal shoreland zone standards will be included in the meeting agenda packet. No discussion, presentation or vote will occur unless directed by Council.

• Workshop: Recommendation from Consultant on Mahoney Reuse Options - The independent consultant City Council enlisted to analyze the City's and South Portland Housing Authority's respective proposals for the future use of the Mahoney School property will present his findings and recommendation to Council. The City Council is expected to vote on the future use of Mahoney at its meeting tentatively scheduled for September 3, 2024.

• Second Reading: School Bond Questions - Second reading on appropriating up to $16,300,000 for security updates within the City's Elementary Schools; Maintenance at Kaler, Skillin, Small, High School building; and Athletic Field Improvements, and to authorize bonds to finance such appropriations. The School Board voted to approve the three questions at its July 8, 2024 meeting. If approved by City Council, these will go to the voters at the November 5, 2024 election.

• Revising Tax Due Dates + Assessing Valuation / Equalization Presentation - City Council will set new due dates for FY25 property tax payments. The Assessor will give a presentation on the Assessing office's equalization process and adjustments to property valuations in South Portland. Assessed property valuations are to be based on market values, per the State Constitution. The Assessor will provide information that will expand on the City's FAQ on this topic: southportland.gov/taxbillfaq
