Did you know that you can give a new life to your old, unwanted appliances that are in working condition? Try selling gently used and newer appliances, or giving away older appliances in working condition on websites such as Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or social media marketplaces or Buy Nothing groups. Offering an appliance for free in a post can lead to a donation to a local non-profit organization that is in need of that appliance. You can also donate old appliances in working order (refrigerators, freezers, microwaves, electric or gas ranges, washers, dryers, dishwashers, and air conditioners to Greater Portland Habitat for Humanity. The items they accept may change depending on availability or seasonality, so it’s worth giving them a call to see what items they are currently accepting. Habitat for Humanity does offer pick up service, but you’ll need to arrange for this service well in advance.
If your appliance is no longer in working order, it can be dropped off at the South Portland Transfer Station for a fee where the parts will be recycled and harmful components (e.g., refrigerants, control boards) will be handled safely. Many stores that sell appliances will also remove an old appliance when you purchase a new one. Sometimes this will be a free service and sometimes they will charge a fee. Just remember that when you choose this option, the appliance will be recycled even if it is in good working condition. With a little planning and groundwork, you can help the planet by keeping an unwanted appliance out of the scrapyard and working in a new household.
