SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – Today, the South Portland Police Department (SPPD) responded to the scene of a crash that occurred shortly before 3:30 PM near the Days Inn on Maine Mall Road. An SUV, operated by a male driver, struck and seriously injured a female pedestrian while she sat in a median. The SUV then struck a car traveling in the opposite direction head-on.
South Portland Fire Rescue treated the struck pedestrian at the scene and transported her to an area hospital; her condition is unknown at the time of this release. Fire Rescue also treated the operator of the vehicle that was struck for minor injuries and transported him to an area hospital. The operator of the SUV was not injured and is cooperating with police.
This is an ongoing investigation with possible charges pending. SPPD has sought assistance from a crash reconstructionist from the Falmouth Police Department to help determine the cause of the accident and condition of the SUV.
