Brownfields 101 Webinar:
September 1 at 12:00 noon
Click here to join the webinar | Agenda with Zoom info

On Tuesday, September 1st, the City will hold a lunchtime webinar to discuss the City’s U.S. EPA-funded Brownfields Assessment Program. This “Brownfields 101” session will provide the public with information on how the program can align the community’s needs and vision with land reuse and redevelopment. The Brownfields program creates opportunities for communities to clean up former industrial (and “not-so-industrial”) sites, resolve historic environmental liabilities, and re-position a property for beneficial reuse.

The City’s contracted Environmental Consultant, Ransom Consulting, LLC, will provide an interactive opportunity for participants to learn the basics of Brownfields, receive information on what work has been completed as part of the Brownfields program to date, and discuss how the City’s program will progress in future years.  The meeting will be held via Zoom Webinar.

Beware the Browntail Moth!

The Browntail is an invasive species found on the coast of Maine and Cape Cod.  The Browntail causes both forest and human health concerns. The tiny hairs covering the Browntail in its lifecycle phase as a caterpillar are poisonous and may cause an uncomfortable rash similar to poison ivy. The rash may last a few hours or several days. Those most sensitive may experience rash symptoms for several weeks. Browntails arrive in early April and may linger through the summer. Browntails also infest oak trees. When left uncontrolled, these little creatures can kill a large oak. Try to avoid and contain these creepy crawlers. These moths are not in South Portland yet, but are as nearby as Portland, so keep your eyes out for them when outdoors. For more information on the Browntail, click here.
