Applying to a Board/Committee

The City Clerk's office is accepting applications to serve on a City Board/Committee.
Interested persons are encouraged to fill out an application online or in person at the City Clerk's office located at City Hall during normal business hours.  Applications on file are regularly sent to the City Councilors who then reach out to applicants to discuss serving on committees.  The Council votes on appointments to the boards and committees at the regular City Council meetings.

For most Boards, City Councilors may appoint from anywhere in the City as long as there is no more than a certain amount of representation from any one district.  Not sure which district you live in?  Open the street directory and look up your address to see.

Board & Committee Members - Policies & Orientation

All appointed committee members must take the oath of office before the City Clerk, and must complete Freedom of Access Act (FOAA) training within 30 days of taking office. A copy of the Board & Committee Member Welcome Packet containing policies and resource information, is given to all new committee members.

Regional Boards & Committees

The South Portland City Council also makes appointments to regional and citizen boards and commissions that seek representatives from South Portland.  These appointments are made as vacancies occur and annually in January at a City Council meeting. While the City Council makes appointments to these boards, they are not city committees governed by City ordinances.
