Stormwater Management Program - Impaired Streams

Every 2 years, the Clean Water Act requires the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (MEDEP) to identify waters that fail to meet state and federal water quality standards. The City of South Portland has 5 such impaired water bodies, collectively referred to as “urban impaired streams.” These include the following:

While the reasons for the urban impaired stream designation vary for each of these water bodies, they all suffer from the adverse impacts of impervious surfaces. There are several local efforts underway to restore these impaired streams so that they eventually attain water quality standards.
