Like most Fire Department's, South Portland responds to more than just fires. Actually, fires are now just a small part our daily activities. Over 80% of our emergency calls are medical in nature. In addition to fires and medical calls we are prepared to respond to an array of emergencies that may affect the residents and visitors to our city. Members of the South Portland Fire Department are equipped and trained to respond to: Hazardous Materials Spills including terrorist acts (WMD), Industrial Accidents such as Confined Space Rescues, High Angle Rescues, Marine Events such as Boat Fires or Ice Rescue. But responding to calls is just part of our job. We spend numerous hours conducting fire prevention activities such as building inspections and public education visits. We have a very extensive emergency management plan that is put into operation if a large winter storm or hurricane targets the city.
These are just some of the examples of what the South Portland Fire Department is working on at any one time. Click on any of the links to the left to learn more about what we do and what we offer the citizens of South Portland.
