In order to receive an absentee ballot, you must request it. You do not need a reason to vote absentee. There are several options for voting absentee: by mail, by voting in person at the Clerk's office, or by picking up a ballot to take home and return by Election Day (a member of your immediate family may also pick up a ballot for you). Information and important deadlines are listed below.
To receive an absentee ballot by mail:
Absentee ballots may be requested 3 months before an election. You can print and mail/fax/drop off the application or call us at (207) 767-3201 to request your ballot or request online. When ballots arrive, we will mail ballots out to those who have made a request.
If you would like your ballot mailed to you, please request your ballot at least 15 days prior to election day. This is the guidance provided by the USPS to ensure timely delivery.
If you don't want to receive your absentee ballot by mail:
When ballots arrive (approximately 30 days before election day), in-person absentee voting will be available at City Hall at the City Clerk's Office during normal business hours.
You can also come in to pick up a ballot for yourself and/or an immediate family member to take home. If you will be picking up a ballot to take home, you will need to fill out an application. You can save time by filling this out ahead of time and bringing it in with you. If you are picking up ballot(s) for immediate family member(s), you will need an application for them, too.
Absentee ballots must be received by 8:00pm on Election Day. You can return your ballot by mail (please mail your ballot at least 7 days prior to Election Day) or use the secure dropbox that will be located in the back of City Hall (25 Cottage Road). This dropbox will be installed before absentee ballots become available and will be monitored 24/7 by security camera. You can also have a member of your immediate family return your ballot for you.
