South Portland Police Respond to Accident Involving Child Struck by Vehicle
SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – Shortly after 8 AM today, a 10-year-old elementary school male was struck on Evans Street near the intersection of Hill Street as he attempted to board a South Portland School Bus. A female South Portland High School student was operating the SUV that struck the child. She stated that she did not see the boy crossing the road, nor the flashing school bus stop sign that was deployed on the side of the bus.
South Portland Police and Fire units arrived on the scene and rendered aid to the child. He was subsequently transported to Maine Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The driver was charged with “Passing a Stopped School Bus with Flashing Lights,” which is a class E offense. The driver possessed an intermediate driver’s license.
The South Portland Police Department would like to remind drivers to please obey rules of the road and be especially mindful of school bus operations.
