South Portland Police Department Unveils New Badge
SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – The South Portland Police Department (SPPD) is issuing new badges with a brand new design to all sworn Officers. The new badge replaces one that has been in use since the early 1970s, and is only the third badge in SPPD’s history.
Approximately a year ago, newly appointed Police Chief Dan Ahern polled his Patrol Officers and learned that they were eager for a new badge. “Officers wanted to differentiate our badge from other departments and wanted to pay homage to the earliest badge of record for South Portland.” It was also important to SPPD to make the new badge more inclusive to all those who wear it by changing the word “Patrolman” to “Officer.”
SPPD formed a committee that agreed on a design, which includes a background depicting our seaside city and iconic Bug Light lighthouse. “Police Officers take great pride in wearing the badge that represents the Department and the community they have sworn to protect and serve,” said Chief Ahern. “I am proud of the work that has been done to bring the new badge to our team. I’m even prouder of the Officers that pin it to their uniforms.”
