The City shares Portland Harbor and Casco Bay with the City of Portland. In 2012 the department took delivery of it's response boat, a 24’ center console, Marine 48. Marine 48 is docked in Portland Harbor during the spring and summer and respond to: water rescues, boat fires, oil spills, dive team activations and search & rescue missions. Squad 44 also carries a small 12’ inflatable boat that can be used around Clarks Pond, Fore River, or any other small body of water where Marine 48 cannot respond
During the winter months the department has a specialized ice rescue “sled” called the Rescue Alive Sled, which can be used to safely retrieve victims who have fallen through the ice, either in a pond or the tidal flats of the fore river.
